Would More Distance Help Your Game?

Do you always reach your ball first?

Tired of hitting more club to the green than your playing partners?

Imagine what a few more yards off the tee would do for your golf game.

Consider the benefits of hitting a 7-iron to the green instead of a 5-iron.

The ball will approach the green with more height and with more spin. Instead of landing and rolling off the back of the green, your ball will bite and stay closer to the pin.

With the ball closer to the pin, the result will be more pars and birdies than you ever made before.

It would be like playing a whole different game!

I am not suggesting you buy new equipment or even deliberately change your swing.

Most likely your swing isn’t the issue. You know how to swing a golf club correctly.

The problem lies with your body’s lack of mobility and stability. For example, you know that you need to get your hands higher in your backswing, but your lack of shoulder mobility won’t allow your hands to get there. Once you gain mobility, your hands will automatically go where they should. You do know how to swing; it is your body that keeps you from doing it.

But don’t worry, you can easily address these mobility & stability issues with a few simple exercises.

Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Body-Swing Connection

fly-in for programsLet me introduce the TPI body-swing connection.

The premise is that lack of mobility & stability in your joints doesn’t allow your body to reach the proper swing positions.

In fact, the inability to get into these positions will cause you to have one or more of the 12 most common swing faults.

The best way to improve your game, prevent injury (lower back pain is the #1 complaint in golf), and continue to enjoy golf for many years, is to take a scientific approach to preparing your body for the physical requirements of the game.

In fact, TPI professionals have the following philosophy.

TPI Professionals don’t believe there is only one way to swing a golf club; rather there are an infinite number of swing styles. But, we do believe there is one efficient way for every player to swing, and it is based on what the player can physically do.

We believe that physical limitations cause movement inefficiencies that lead to a loss of power, swing speed, and inconsistent ball striking.

Eliminate these physical limitations and the effect will improve your golf game.

Obviously, the limitations need to be identified. And this is done by evaluating your movement patterns.

The evaluation involves an assessment of swing mechanics, biomechanics, physical fitness, movement quality, and a review of previous injuries.

What is a TPI Golf Screen?

Physical Screen

A TPI golf screen is a physical assessment of 13 movement patterns that are important to the golf swing.

The physical screen assesses how well your body can move and support itself during the golf swing. The screen requires no equipment and is quick; it takes approximately one hour.

The screen will identify physical limitation and imbalances that may cause you to have one or more of the 12 most common swing faults.

Swing Analysis Video

Besides the physical screen, we will video your swing from both the face-on & down-the-line view.

The purpose is to capture your swing and analyze the video for characteristics of the 12 most common swing faults.

The video will be analyzed, and processed screenshots will be sent back to you to review.

The marked-up screenshots will show your body and club position at key points in the golf swing.

The delivered screenshot package will show proof that you either have a particular swing fault or that you don’t have the fault.

For instance, in the “down-the-line” photo to the right, I have marked up my swing. The long red line is a trace of my golf club shaft at address. The shorter red line is a trace of my club shaft when my lead arm was parallel to the ground during the backswing.

The blue line is a trace of the club shaft when my lead arm is parallel to the ground during the downswing. The green line is where my club SHOULD be. Since the blue line is above the red lines, called the slot, I have an Over The Top swing fault.

This swing fault is characteristic of reduced spinal and hip mobility and/or core stability. Poor balance can also lead to swinging over the top. Combine this will the physical screen data and the fitness professional can narrow down the issues for this swing fault.

The power is in the dual screening and knowing the causes of each swing fault. The fitness professional can focus in on the overlying physical issue.

This in itself is worth the cost of the screening.

Don’t Have Room to Hit Balls at Your House?

No problem, I have soft foam golf balls that will not damage anything.

12 Most Common Swing Faults

Any of these 12 faults can affect the way you perform on the golf course.

If you have a swing instructor in all likelihood, he or she can see the swing fault. They are trying to correct the issue by suggesting you try a particular swing correction. They can suggest that you drop the club back into the slot, or turn your hips and not slide towards the target until they are blue in the face, but if you can’t physically perform that move, it isn’t going to happen.

Your performance will not get any better until you have the limitation(s) corrected.

Don’t feel alone, most golfers have at least one swing fault.

Combining the Physical Screen & Video Analysis

Both the physical screen and video analysis are excellent tools to evaluate limitations.

But by reviewing both of them, a more precise causation for the limitations can be made.

From the physical screening and video analysis, an exercise program can be developed to reduce or eliminate any physical limitations.

With the limitations removed your body can move as it should, which will correct the swing faults.

Ideally, a TPI fitness professional will team up with the swing instructor to provide you with an integrated program that will lower your handicap.

Speaking of golf handicaps, the TPI assessment identifies your physical imbalances and establishes a Golf Fitness Handicap (GFH).

The GFH is equivalent to a golf handicap in terms of physical capabilities. Using the physical assessment, a personal fitness program is designed to correct imbalances that will eventually improve your:

  • stability;
  • mobility;
  • flexibility;
  • balance;
  • posture;
  • strength and;
  • power.

There are other added benefits to the fitness program; your improved physical fitness levels will:

  • increase endurance;
  • increase injury prevention;
  • prevent/reduce or eliminate back pain; and
  • improve functional fitness (everyday activities).

After a prescribed period, the TPI golf screen is repeated, and a new GFH is established.

The GHF is a method to document and track the progress of the fitness program. It quantifies the process to show you progress towards your goals.
